What Decides the Price of a Corrugated Box?
A corrugated box price is mostly the paper inside it. GSM and ply set the material cost, box size sets how much board each box consumes, and quantity spreads setup cost. Printing, die charges and the current kraft paper market move the final rate up or down.
The seven levers
| Factor | How it moves price |
|---|---|
| Paper GSM | Heavier paper, higher rate. The biggest lever. |
| Ply | 5 ply uses more paper than 3 ply, so it costs more. |
| Box size | Bigger box, more board per piece. |
| Quantity | Larger runs dilute setup and handling cost per box. |
| Printing | More colours and coverage add plate and run cost. |
| Die charge | One-time cost for die-cut styles, held for repeats. |
| Paper market | Kraft paper rates move, and box rates follow. |
Why two quotes for the same box differ
Almost always, the board is not the same. One quote may be built on lighter GSM or a different flute mix. Ask both suppliers to state ply, GSM per layer and flute on the quote. Once the spec matches, the comparison becomes real. Until then, the cheaper quote may simply be a weaker box.
How to buy well without squeezing quality
- Fix the spec first, then negotiate the rate on that fixed spec.
- Consolidate sizes where possible. Fewer sizes, bigger runs, better rates.
- Plan repeat orders. A unit protects pricing for buyers who order on rhythm.
- Ask how paper market changes are passed on, so a moving rate never surprises you.
Frequently asked questions
Why do box prices change between orders?
Kraft paper is a traded commodity. When paper rates move meaningfully, box rates follow.
Is the die charge paid every time?
No. It is a one-time charge for die-cut styles, and the die is stored for your repeat orders.
Does printing always raise price a lot?
Simple one-colour marking adds little. Heavy multi-colour coverage adds more, mostly in plates and run time.
