What Is an RSC Box?

QUICK ANSWER

RSC stands for Regular Slotted Container, the standard corrugated shipping box. All four top and bottom flaps are the same depth, the outer flaps meet at the centre, and the box ships flat with one glued or stitched joint. It is the cheapest strong way to pack most products, which is why it is everywhere.

Anatomy of an RSC

  • Four panels around the body, closed by a single manufacturer joint.
  • Top and bottom flaps of equal depth. Outer flaps meet, inner flaps leave a gap on most sizes.
  • Ships and stores flat, opens into shape at the packing table, closes with tape.

Why it dominates shipping

The RSC wastes very little board in cutting, needs no die, and runs fast on standard machines. That makes it the most economical box per unit of strength. For transit and storage, its flat top and bottom stack cleanly on pallets, and its strength is easy to tune through ply and GSM without changing the style.

When not to use one

If the box is the retail presentation, if you want tool-free tape-free closing, or if the product needs a fitted tray, a die-cut style serves better. Many brands run both: die-cut for the unboxing, RSC as the outer shipper.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes can an RSC be made in?

Almost any practical size. RSC is a style, not a size, and units cut it to your dimensions.

Is an RSC always 3 ply?

No. RSCs are made in 3, 5 and 7 ply depending on the load.

Why is there a gap between the inner flaps?

Flap depth follows box width. On many proportions the inner flaps do not meet, which is normal and does not indicate a defect.
